What is the External Email Tag?

Most email scams begin with messages from external email systems. To enhance security for UM users and increase awareness of phishing email threats, an External Email Tag is added to emails received via UM’s internet-facing email gateways. This banner is prominently displayed at the top of each external email, helping you quickly identify emails originating from outside UM.

The External Email Tag is a reminder to pause and carefully evaluate the email before taking any action:

Check the sender:

• Is it from someone you know?
• Were you expecting this email?
• If unsure, verify the sender’s identity by contacting them via phone or another trusted method

Assess the content:

• Does the email make sense?
• Legitimate emails will never ask you to provide sensitive information, such as your login credentials, to maintain access to your account.
• By paying attention to the External Email Tag, you can better protect yourself from phishing scams and suspicious email content.
